Dog Allergies Medication

Your dog will be uncomfortable no matter what type of allergy she has. A trip to dog allergies vet may be necessary to get her quick relief. Your vet may provide you with dog allergies medication to give to your dog.

Here is a quick guide to some of the medications your vet may prescribe…

Fatty Acid Supplements – Some supplements can actually end up harming your dog more than it helps them. Be sure to consult with your vet before starting any treatment. However, H2 blockers can soothe and relieve your dog’s allergy symptoms while healing the skin. It will also provide better protection against future allergy outbreaks.

Antihistamines – Antihistamines used to treat dog allergies can come in many forms. They are usually quite effective for a large number of allergy sufferers. They can be used to treat…

  • itching
  • hot spots
  • inflammation
  • eye infections

Side effects can vary depending on the type of antihistamine prescribed.

Biotin – Biotin is essentially a vitamin B supplement. It is usually added to your dog’s food to soothe and heal itchy, dry, and cracked skin. It can also be beneficial to your dog’s overall health and does not seem to have any side effects.

Biotin is considered a good all around treatment for dog allergies.

Steroids – There have been some negative reports surrounding the use of steroids to treat your dog’s allergies. However, some vets do still prescribe them. Just be aware that it is your right to refuse a steroid treatment for your dog.

However, you should know that they can be quite effective in treating more severe allergic reactions. They also do provide some relief from itching and inflammation. But they can have some side effects including…

  • dehydration
  • weight gain
  • depression
  • diarrhea

If your dog is only suffering from a mild allergic reaction, medication may not be necessary. If the allergy is severe then your vet should be able to effectively diagnose the allergy and prescribe appropriate medication to help your dog.
