Dog Food and Protein Allergies

Although most of know about dog food allergies, what you may not know is that they are most often caused by a high protein diet. Most of our dogs are automatically put on this diet from they are just puppies.

Most of us who have dogs with food allergies tend to point fingers at the add preservatives and flavorings that are found in most dog food. However, research has show that this in not really the case at all.

The main triggers of dog food allergies are…

  • beef
  • soy
  • wheat
  • corn
  • dairy products
  • chicken and eggs

All of these contain protein as an important part of their makeup. Other than that they have very little else in common. So it is quite logical to conclude that protein content is a factor in causing dog food allergies.

Recent studies have shed a little more light on this issue. It has been revealed that rather than be affected by the composition of a particular protein, an allergic reaction to dog food is more closely related to the amount of protein consumed. In other words, if your dog has a protein allergy then he will react to to protein.

Dog allergies usually develop as a result of exposure to a substance or as a result of genetics. Your dog is either allergic to protein or she isn’t. Cooking your dog fresh meals may help in some way to reduce her chances at an outbreak.

  1. Thanks for writing about pet allergies. There needs to be more information about food and it’s relationship to allergies. I have one dog with allergies and not much information has been given to me. I have to keep researching. Please, keep writing. Thanks again.
