When Do I Start Joint Supplements for My Dog

Believe it or not, dogs are much like us in many ways. And just like us, dogs can develop arthritis. In fact, arthritis in dogs is one of the most common  health problems seen by vets.

Unfortunately, most dog owners and vets rarely detect the early signs of arthritis in our dogs. This is because it is part of a dog’s character to ignore pain and tenderness until arthritis in the joints has progressed significantly.

Treating arthritis and promoting good dog joint health is very similar to treatment in humans. There are some excellent dog joint supplements that you can give to your dog before they develop arthritis. And if they develop arthritis, some of the best dog joint supplement recommended are Glucosamine and Chondroitin.

Definition: Glucosamine - a naturally occurring compound that is composed of sugar and an amino acid. It is involved in the body’s production of lubricants for the joints and shock absorption essential to maintaining healthy cartilage and joint function.

Definition: Chondroitin - also know as chondroitin sulphate. A naturally occurring compound that is found in cartilage. It is believed to promote healthy joints by preventing some of the effects of damaging enzymes, increasing water retention, and enhancing the elasticity of cartilage.

Recently, use of these compounds as a dog joint supplement have proven to be significant contributors to easing the discomfort of arthritis in dogs. The compounds are also believed to actually promote the healing and repair of tissues.

BulldogDogs that are taking joint supplements have shown very few side effects. Rarely, a dog may vomit or get diarrhea if they are started on a dose that is too high in the beginning. Reducing the dose or giving your dog her supplements along with her food usually ease these symptoms.

Because of the safety of these dog joint supplements, they are well suited for long term use.  Most dogs can stay on joint supplements for the rest of their lives. After your dog has had about six to eight weeks to start feeling the benefits of these supplements you can go ahead and reduce the dosage.

I would suggest that you start joint supplements for your dog after age seven. Just be sure you purchase her supplements from a manufacturer that is known for their quality product.
